Many modern structures exceed those of Egypt in terms of purely physical size.
▶ 출제자의 의도 파악하기
1. that 또는 대명사 that의 복수형인 those에 밑줄
2. that 또는 those 뒤에 다음과 같은 요소가 있을 경우
⇒ that이 대명사이므로, 뒤에서 명사를 후치 수식할 수 있는 요소들입니다.
1) 전치사구
ex.) The brain's running costs are about eight to ten times as high as those of the body's muscle.
2) 현재분사 또는 과거분사
ex.) In the less developed world, the percentage of the population involved in agriculture is declining, but at the same time, those remaining in agriculture are not benefiting from technological advances.
3) 형용사구
ex.) Those unfamiliar with his work may be wondering, why give such an important award to this old man.
4) 관계대명사 또는 관계부사절
ex.) Those who do not take enough nutrition are not likely to be healthy.
▶ 풀이 전략
1. 앞에 that이나 those가 받을만한 명사가 있는 경우
⇒ 단수명사를 받으면 that, 복수명사를 받으면 those
ex. 1) The population of U.S. is larger than that of Korea.
ex. 2) The ears of a rabbit are longer than those of a dog.
2. 앞에 that이나 those가 받을만한 명사가 없는 경우
⇒ those다음에 주격관계대명사 who와 be동사 are(were)이 생략된 경우로,
"~하는 사람들"로 해석했을 때 맞다면, those를 사용해야 함.
ex.) Those running after the dog are my sisters.
(그 개를 뒤쫓아가고 있는 사람들은 내 여자 형제들이다.)
▶ 기출문제 분석
Many modern structures exceed those of Egypt in terms of purely physical size.
해석: 많은 현대 구조물은 순전히 물리적인 크기 면에서는 이집트의 구조물들을 능가한다.
1. those에 밑줄이 그어져 있고, 뒤에 전치사구 of Egypt가 있으므로,
출제자의 의도가 "대명사 that" 이라는 것을 파악
2. 문맥상 밑줄 친 those는 앞의 명사 structures를 받아 주고 있고,
structures가 복수이므로 those로 받는 것이 맞음.
▶ 결 론
1. that또는 those의 밑줄이 그어져 있을 경우 뒤에 명사 후치수식 요소가 있는지 파악
2-1. 앞의 단수명사를 받아 줄 경우 that, 복수명사를 받아 줄 경우 those
2-2. 앞에 받을 만한 명사가 없고, "~하는 사람들"로 해석될 경우 those가 정답
